Immigration law updated March 2020

March 2020 brings another statement of changes to the immigration rules. The new statement of changes brings about changes to the EU settlement scheme, including changes to the Surinder Singh route and other corrections and amendments under Appendix EU of the Immigration Rules.

The statement of changes also freezes the Tier 2 (General) salary limit for indefinite leave to remain which will remain on a minimum salary of £35, 800.  This was going to rise in April 2020 and April 2021, however, those rises have been cancelled on advice from Migration Advisory Committee (MAC)

There are other minor changes to the rules, but the change of the most interest is that of the Tier 2 salary limit freeze for indefinite leave to remain.  MAC made a number of other recommendations with a general rule to opening this route up to more people by reducing minimum salary requirements for a lot of jobs and opening up lower skilled work as a route for Tier 2 (currently only jobs at RQF level 6 or above, could be sponsored under Tier 2).  This Is a step towards some of those recommendations, however, we are likely to see further changes from this report being incorporated into the ‘new immigration system’….
